CCS loves Comic Art

This is an ad I did for Comic Art Magazine. I was given the text, a size (1.75" x 5"), and a deadline. James (Sturm) had a few suggestions after my initial thumbnails and off I went.

The lettering, and building lines were done with a 513EF nib; everything inside the window was drawn with a #4 brush. Colored on Photoshop CS2.

Ivan Brunetti is to have a feature in this next issue of Comic Art. I think James said he's bringing it to show us when he visits the school next week.

Box City!

In today's class Steve Bissette had us consider self-promotion as he gave us examples of his own. In the afternoon we had botanical artists show us slides and examples of their work, then gave us a crack at drawing some of the flowers they brought in (I'll post those later, my scanner is being an jerk today).
Then in the later afternoon Steve gave us free reign with a room full of boxes and a few rolls of tape, and maybe a couple of hours to build a city that we will draw next week.

Work was quickly delegated. Here we have some shacks, a bank maybe? and our lovely river.

The cartoonists at the Center for Cartoon Studies are like one living organism, everybody playing their part to make the whole function smoothly. Especially if we use lots of tape.

We split into a couple of groups, my group choosing to create this majestic mountain (secret housing of the Batcave, which later changed into the Catcave in the Meowtain).

The Red Light District became one of the most developed areas of our wholesome town, comlete with parking. You can't tell from the photo, but the building on the left with the windows was the free clinic.

And, our pride and joy, the Helicopter! There were at least five of us sitting around the construction of this, each contributing to this Frankenstien of an aircraft, and our eyes teared with joy when the birthing was complete. Until...

Another group, coincidentaly, at the exact same time, was building this monstrosity.

So we took care of it.
